                           President's Column

It's time to review the year! Where did the time go!

In 1999 we grew again by leaps and bounds. Membership increased from a 170to 280 by the end of the year! We obtained a P.O. Box and Voice mail and saw the participation in our Onelist listserv more than double.

One of our biggest accomplishments was the computer fair held in March at the Sheffield Community Center. A nice feature story in the Morning Journal brought us a large number in attendance. Many new memberships resulted!

Our other large event was the program that we hosted at the French Creek Nature Center with Microsoft as our guest presenter.

We also received articles in the Amherst News Times and the Lorain Public Library's newsletter, the Dimensions. Then to gain more exposure, we shared a table with the Lorain Library at the Lorain County Technology Show in November.

We ordered T-Shirts to sell to our membership, started a PIG SIG (food and gabbing after the regular meeting at a local restaurant), and held our first annual Picnic at Amherst's Maude Neiding Park!

We upgraded our computer and built one out of our old one and bought an E machine! Several older machines were fixed up and passed on to those in need. Several of our members continued to take phone calls and made "housecalls" helping members with their computer problems.

Our newsletter grew and got even better and more advertisers were added. At the same time our web site expanded and won the Intergalactic web site contest for Useability!

We began the process to incorporate and to apply to become a 501(c)(3). The first step in this process was to do a major re-write of our bylaws which were adopted in November. Also during November the dues were raised to help cover the costs of moving our meeting location next year to the larger St. Joseph's Community Center auditorium.

This year we held a number of new Special Interest Groups in many different locations! We used the Lorain Middle School, Avon High Public Library, Vermilion Public Library, and Lorain Public Library. As well as our regular SIGs on MS Works and Problem Solving PCs, we had SIGs for Beginners, on the subject of Genealogy and HTML. In October and November we sponsored a series of programs in 4 locations on How to Buy a Computer and one on How to Buy a Printer.

Programs this year for our regular meeting and Internet SIGs were varied as usual! Some of the topics covered were Tax Programs, MS Publisher, Paint Shop Pro, Powerquest, Y2K, Digital Cameras, graphics, greeting card programs, Office 2000, E Machines and Windows. For Internet topics, we explored Netscape Messenger, MS IE, Eudora, and other email programs. We looked at I-Phone and Internet utilities and shared various tips and tricks.

A great Christmas Party wrapped up the year with elections, refreshments, a raffle, and a nice presentation from Comm-Unique, from Minneapolis. We had a nice turn out and a good time was had by all!

See you next year!!!
